What is a composite fire extinguisher, and how is it different from a metal one?
A composite extinguisher uses a non-metal body (e.g. HDPE plastic with aramid winding) which makes it lighter and corrosion-free. Metal ones are heavier and can rust over time.
Which classes of fire does the composite foam extinguisher handle?
The foam type is suitable for Class A (ordinary combustibles like wood, paper), Class B (flammable liquids), and electrical fires up to 1000 V.
How long is the shelf life of these extinguishers before replacement or major servicing?
They have a shelf life of 20 years. Also, the body has a 10-year corrosion guarantee.
At what operating temperature can I use these extinguishers safely?
For foam type: from −5 °C to +60 °C. For the powder type: from −30 °C to +60 °C.
What is the difference between the foam version and the powder version?
Foam version (with AFFF) is good for Class A, B, and electrical fires. Powder version (ABC powder) adds protection also for Class C (gases) and non-conductive electrical fires.
How long do these extinguishers discharge (i.e. how much time do I have once I start using them)?
Discharge duration depends on size. For example, smaller ones (~2 L) last about 18 seconds, larger (~9 L) ones give approx 40-45 seconds (foam type). Powder types are similar but somewhat shorter for larger sizes.
Are these extinguishers compliant with Indian and international standards?
Yes. They are ISI marked and also comply with the EN3 standard. They conform to BIS Standard BIS 15683: 2018 for composite extinguishers.
Can these extinguishers be used outdoors or on moving vehicles?
Yes. Because of their composite body, they resist corrosion, are lightweight, and durable. Also, for land use they come with 2 pressure gauges; for ships/boats 1 gauge with a Schrader valve. So they are suitable for varied environments.
How far does the extinguishing agent shoot (throw distance)?
Throw (lancing) distance varies with size and type: smaller units give approx 3 meters, midsize ~4-5 meters, and larger ~7 meters+.
What maintenance is needed, and how often?
These extinguishers are largely maintenance-free in terms of body corrosion. But some checks are still needed: pressure gauge, seals, nozzle, hose, etc. Probably yearly inspection or as recommended.
If I accidentally spray on live electrical equipment, is it safe?
The foam and powder types are designed to be safe up to 1000 volts, reducing the risk. But safety practices still matter—avoid direct contact, wear protection etc.
What is the “expellant medium” used?
They use Nitrogen (N₂) based gas to push out the foam or powder.
What sizes are available?
They come in vessel capacities of 2 L, 6 L, 9 L.
